KEY WORD KIWIS X3
Looking for a way to increase literacy, key word usage, spelling?
These kiwi keywords are great to use for extended writing tasks with spelling as a focus, as a means of scaffolding and literacy support. They can also be used to increase use of terminology in both written and oracy work.
Key words for the following topics:
Food Hygiene, Safety and Food Poisoning
Carbohydrates and Fibre
Using the Cooker
Just print, cut out and laminate
This is a retrieval mat for use in any subject. This is a designated resources for students to complete retrieval practice on. I laminate and students use wipeboard pens to fill in their answers. This is a really good low-stakes way of introducing retrieval, because students can wipe off answers.
There is an area for a quick quiz (questions requiring an A,B,C,D type answer or perhaps one word)
Lined ‘paper’ area for slightly longer answers like sentences or phrases
When students have complete the questions I use the thought bubble space for students to think of key words from last lesson
The magnifying glass is there for students to write any questions they would like to ask- this is good for students who often forget their question. This space gives them an opportunity to write it down whilst you are busy doing the register etc.

Food & Nutrition/food technology keyword ‘word cloud’.
This could be used for praise postcards, workbook and recipe book front covers, posters, wall vinyl.
This worksheet is useful when exploring Food Provenance. Students get information about a certain food and explore the journey of that food from production to disposal. There is also a space for a definition of Food waste and sustainability.
This workbook is for use by Y7 Y8 or Y9 students in Food & Nutrition. It covers Vegetable and Meat Theory. It consists of 5 activities:
Meat, Poultry and Alternatives
Meat Investigation
Fruit and vegetable research task
Fruits and Vegetables – Topic Quiz
Mark the topic quiz (mark scheme included)
GCSE Food Preparation & Nutrition Food Safety Card Game
This is a powerpoint which contains a card game whereby students need to match up key words and definitions to do with food safety.
Usage:
Print out A4 or A5 size
Cut in half
Students need to match key words to definitions, could be individual, group or whole class game
**VARIATIONS: **
Pairs: lay all cards out faced down and each student turns over 2 cards, if it’s the correct definition and keyword the student takes the 2 cards.
Find someone: give every student one card, they circulate around the room and find a person who has either the keyword for their definition or the definition for their keyword. Pairs could then present their keyword and definition back to the class.
Food & Nutrition/Food Technology Holidays Skills Challenge
This is a challenge worksheet that I have used for over the summer holidays but it could be used over any holiday or term, or as ongoing homework. The worksheet is for students to repeatedly practice key skills, encouraging spaced practice of basic core competencies.
This could be used for all of KS3.
Currently there is a reward system on the document based on my schools house system with house points. I have removed my school logo and house icons so that you can insert your own house logos etc. Housepoints for different levels could be substituted for your own system eg. merits.
Food & Nutrition/Food Technology Student Voice
6 questions/statements for students to answer, with multiple choice answers from “strongly agree” to strongly disagree"
Insights are around teacher expectations, progress, curriculum intent, feedback, GCSE potential

A nice year 7 or LA Y8 recipe. Completed in 55 minutes and guides students through making mini chicken and vegetable kebabs.
Editable version for ease.
KS3 Food & Nutrition/Food Technology Picture, step by step method.
This resource contains a step by step method with pictures for a Ragu Sauce recipe. This can be used in year 7 practical lessons or low ability classes as a method of extra scaffolding. I have found this much more successful than a written recipe alone.
“Stretch and Challenge fact” on each picture guide in blue box to encourage retrieval
Just print and laminate. Could put 2 picture guides back to back. Easy to wipe down and reuse- a long term investment resource.
